A fire broke out at the home of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in the early hours of Monday morning, prompting a police investigation and a continued cordon around the property.
Blaze damages front of house
The incident occurred shortly after 1.30am at Sir Keir’s north London residence. According to a statement from the Metropolitan Police, the London Fire Brigade alerted officers to the fire, which caused visible damage to the entrance of the property. No injuries were reported.
A police spokesperson confirmed: “On Monday 12 May at 1.35am, police were alerted by the London Fire Brigade to reports of a fire at a residential address. Officers attended the scene. Damage was caused to the property’s entrance. Nobody was hurt.”
Investigation under way
The cause of the fire remains unknown and a full investigation is now under way. Forensic teams and fire investigators are working at the scene, which remains cordoned off as enquiries continue. The Met has urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward and contact police via the 101 non-emergency number.
It is not currently known whether Sir Keir was at home at the time of the fire or if any of his family members were present.
Heightened tensions and security
The incident comes during a politically sensitive period, with the prime minister recently announcing a crackdown on migration as part of a broader domestic policy push. While there is no suggestion at this stage that the fire was politically motivated, security around senior political figures has been under increased scrutiny in recent years.
Sir Keir, who became prime minister following the 2024 general election, has yet to comment publicly on the fire.
Public reaction and ongoing coverage
The event has sparked concern among local residents and political figures, though the swift response by emergency services ensured the fire was contained and no one was harmed.
Further updates are expected as the police investigation progresses.
