Police have released CCTV images after two thieves stole a specially made boat from the back of a van in Bury.
Targeted theft in service yard
The incident happened in the service yard of The Millgate, where the suspects forced entry and targeted the vehicle. Inside was a one-of-a-kind custom-made boat, modelled on the famous “Sovereign of the Sea” and designed for VE Day commemorations.
Greater Manchester Police say the offenders made off with the boat, valued at around £1,500, during the raid. The vessel has since been recovered, but the culprits remain at large.
CCTV shows two men police want to trace
CCTV images released by detectives show two men entering and exiting the van during the theft. Police believe these men could hold key information about the crime and are asking for help to identify them.
A GMP spokesperson said: “The approximate value of the boat is £1,500 and whilst it has been recovered, officers are keen to identify the offenders.”
Boat made for special VE Day events
The theft has caused anger in the community. The stolen boat was created to be displayed as part of local VE Day events, with organisers devastated it was taken. The hand-crafted replica was described as irreplaceable.
Appeal for witnesses
Police are urging anyone who recognises the men or who has any information to come forward as soon as possible.
The spokesperson added: “Images have been released of two people officers believe can assist their enquiries. Anyone with information should contact police on 101 or email [email protected] quoting log 1626 of 03/05/2025.”
Alternatively, information can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
