Officers were called to Tobruk Road at around 4.25pm on Wednesday after reports that a man and a woman had been stabbed. Armed police responded and the suspect was shot at the scene by a police marksman. He was taken to hospital for treatment.
The man and woman who were injured were also taken to hospital, where their conditions are described as serious but stable.
Police cordon in place as investigation begins
A police cordon remains in place and officers have been conducting house-to-house enquiries and reviewing CCTV footage. Merseyside Police say the investigation is still in its early stages.
Detective Superintendent Paul Speight said:
“I know that people who live in this area of Huyton and the wider communities of Merseyside will be shocked by this incident. We are still in the very early stages of investigating and part of our initial enquiries will be to establish the full circumstances of what happened.”
He added that the incident is believed to be isolated and confirmed that no one else is being sought in connection with the attack.
IOPC launches independent investigation
As is standard when police use firearms, the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. The watchdog confirmed that it declared an independent investigation shortly before 7pm and has already begun gathering evidence.
An IOPC spokesperson said:
“Our investigation is in its initial stages and no further information is available at this time.”
All three people involved in the incident remain in hospital. Police continue to appeal for witnesses and information.
