Manhunt underway for arson suspect with North East links

Police are urgently trying to track down a man wanted in connection with a suspected arson attack.

Northumbria Police are appealing to the public for help in locating 29-year-old Callum Barnes, who is believed to have links to both Gateshead and Houghton-le-Spring. Officers say they’ve been carrying out extensive enquiries for several weeks but so far, Barnes remains at large.

The investigation centres around a suspected arson offence, though further details have not been publicly released. Officers have warned that anyone who may be knowingly helping Barnes evade capture could face serious consequences.

Public urged not to approach

Members of the public are being urged not to approach Barnes if they spot him, but instead to contact police immediately with his location or any relevant sightings.

A police spokesperson said: “We are appealing to the public for any information that can help us trace Callum Barnes. He is wanted in connection with a suspected arson offence, and we are determined to bring him into custody as soon as possible.

“If you have seen Callum or know where he might be staying, please get in touch. It’s important that people understand – harbouring a wanted individual is a criminal offence and those involved could face prosecution.”

Multiple lines of contact open

The force has made it clear there are several ways the public can safely pass on information.

People can send Northumbria Police a direct message on Facebook or X, use the live chat feature on the official force website, or complete the online report form. For those unable to go online, the team can also be contacted by phone via 101.

Anyone who contacts the force should quote reference number NP-20250518-1183.

Ongoing push to trace wanted individuals

This manhunt is the latest in a series of appeals by Northumbria Police as they continue to target suspects involved in violent or high-risk incidents across the region. In recent months, officers have ramped up their use of public appeals and social media outreach in a bid to locate offenders hiding in plain sight.

Detectives have not confirmed whether Barnes is considered dangerous, but the nature of the suspected offence means officers are treating the case as a priority.

If you know where he is, or if you’ve seen anything suspicious in the Gateshead or Houghton-le-Spring areas, you’re urged to come forward. Any details, no matter how small, could prove vital in helping officers bring this case to a close.

To remain anonymous, members of the public can also contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
