Fan violence erupts ahead of Europa League final
Spanish police are investigating a wave of football-related violence after Manchester United and Tottenham supporters clashed in the run-up to tonight’s Europa League final in Bilbao.
Rival fans brawl in San Sebastián streets
Violence broke out in the Old Town of San Sebastián on Monday evening, just 48 miles from Bilbao. Footage shows rival supporters squaring up before throwing glasses, chairs and even wheelie bins during a chaotic street fight. The area, popular with tourists, was left littered with broken glass as tensions flared.
Police confirm no arrests despite identification
Ertzaintza, the Basque Country’s police force, confirmed several individuals involved in the disturbances had been identified. However, no arrests have yet been made. Officers described the fight as serious but said no one had been hospitalised. A spokesperson said: “We are still reviewing footage. The reasons behind the fight remain under investigation.”
More violence breaks out in Santander
In a separate incident in Santander, around an hour west of Bilbao, Manchester United fans were filmed goading a pair of Tottenham supporters—believed to be a father and son—outside the Siboney Café. The confrontation escalated into violence, with a third man later becoming involved. Cantabrian police confirmed officers were dispatched, but by the time they arrived, the scene had cleared and no formal complaints had been made.
Spurs fans cause damage in Bilbao
Back in Bilbao, groups of Tottenham fans were seen destroying traffic lights in the city centre. Despite the disturbances, authorities insisted the overall situation was under control. “There have been no arrests so far and no reports of serious injuries,” a spokesperson said.
Tensions rise before high-stakes final
Up to 80,000 English supporters are expected in the city as the two Premier League sides face off at the San Mamés Stadium. With both clubs looking to salvage disappointing domestic seasons, police say they will maintain a strong presence throughout the day to prevent any further disorder. Fans are being urged to behave responsibly, with authorities warning that further violence could lead to arrests and stadium bans.
