Police Make Arrest After Racist Abuse And Vandalism Caught On Camera In Basildon

Shocking scenes spark public outcry
Police have arrested a man after footage emerged of two topless men climbing onto a shopping parade in Essex and painting England flags on the rooftops. The incident, filmed in broad daylight on Whitmore Way, Basildon, has now been viewed over 5.8 million times on social media platform X.

Footage shows flags daubed and slurs shouted
The video, which quickly went viral, shows the pair painting several St George’s Crosses above a row of shops including a pharmacy, takeaway, and off-licence. One of the men is then heard shouting a racist slur at a woman walking past with a child, sparking outrage from the local community and beyond.

Police confirm arrest over disturbing footage
Essex Police launched an urgent investigation after receiving numerous complaints from the public. On Saturday, 23 August, a 33-year-old man from Basildon was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and conspiracy to commit criminal damage. He has since been questioned and released on bail while the investigation continues.

A police spokesperson said: “At one stage in the video, racist abuse is audibly and visibly directed at a woman who is passing by alongside some children. We are assessing the video in question, but if anyone has any further information which could assist us, or any concerns, please get in touch.”

Senior officers condemn ‘disgraceful’ behaviour
Chief Inspector Paul Hogben spoke out about the footage, saying: “Regardless of anyone’s thoughts or views, causing damage by applying paint to people’s properties is clearly a criminal offence. Aside from that simple fact, some of the language directed towards a member of the public in this incident was disgraceful. I’m confident the vast majority of people in Essex share the view this language has no place in our county.”

He added that the force is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all communities in Essex and that “behaviour like this does nothing to further any argument or make any valid point beyond harming our district and causing distress, alarm and fear to innocent people.”

Council and community leaders speak out
Basildon Borough Council leader Gavin Callaghan also condemned the actions, stating: “There is a big difference between flying a flag and vandalism. The video circulating of men painting a St George’s flag on the shops on Whitmore Way wasn’t just about a flag, it was laced with vile racist abuse aimed at a mum and her young child. That is totally wrong and must be called out.”

Online trend adds to tensions
The incident follows a growing trend dubbed “Operation Raise the Colours,” which has seen people painting England flags on roundabouts and pavements across the UK. In some areas including Brighton, Tower Hamlets and Birmingham, local councils have stepped in to remove the unauthorised markings amid rising tensions.

Police are continuing to investigate the Basildon incident and have urged anyone with further information or additional footage to come forward.
