Police have launched an investigation after the body of a woman was discovered near a cricket ground in Burnage.
Emergency services race to scene
Officers and paramedics were called to Brookthorpe Avenue at around 3pm on Monday, May 5, after reports of a body being found nearby. The grim discovery was made close to the former Burnage cricket club, which has now closed.
A large cordon was immediately thrown up around the site, with police guarding the scene into Tuesday. A blue forensics tent has been erected at the rear of a property backing onto the field.
Woman not yet identified
Greater Manchester Police confirmed the woman has not yet been formally identified. It is also unknown how old she was. Detectives have authorised a Home Office post-mortem to help establish the cause of death.
In a statement, GMP said: “We are investigating after the body of a woman was found near Brookthorpe Avenue, Burnage, at around 3pm on Monday 5 May. Officers are working to identify the woman and a Home Office post-mortem has been authorised. Anyone with information should call us, quoting log 1867 of 5/5/25.”
Neighbours left shocked as search teams move in
Neighbours told how police arrived quickly on Monday afternoon and began combing the area for clues. One local described seeing officers ‘searching through the grass’ while another reported Tactical Aid Unit teams at the scene alongside forensic specialists.
The cricket ground and field remain cordoned off on Tuesday, with officers stationed on Kingsway as the investigation continues.
Unclear if death being treated as suspicious
At this stage, police have not confirmed whether they are treating the death as suspicious. The field remains taped off as detectives carry out extensive enquiries to piece together what happened.
