A man has been jailed after launching a frightening and unprovoked attack on a 15-year-old girl in broad daylight at Manchester Piccadilly.
The incident took place at approximately 4:30pm on Saturday 28 December 2024, in the heart of Manchester’s bustling transport hub. The teenage victim had been walking through the station concourse with a group of friends when she was suddenly approached from behind by 25-year-old Fawzi Hamza.
Without warning, Hamza grabbed the strap of her handbag and began violently pushing and pulling her in a desperate attempt to wrestle it from her shoulder. The terrifying ordeal unfolded in front of dozens of commuters, many of whom stopped in their tracks as the girl cried out for help.
Passers-by were quick to intervene, with several members of the public rushing to the girl’s defence. British Transport Police officers, who were stationed nearby, responded within moments and swiftly detained Hamza at the scene. He was taken into custody and later charged with attempted robbery.
Appearing at Manchester Crown Court, Hamza—who is of no fixed address—pleaded guilty to the charge. On Tuesday 24 June 2025, he was sentenced to 10 months in prison. In addition to his custodial sentence, the court also imposed a victim surcharge.
During sentencing, the judge commended the members of the public who stepped in and praised the swift response of police officers, noting that such actions likely prevented further harm.
Detective Constable Leonidas Christoforou of British Transport Police said:
“This was an incredibly frightening incident for the young girl, who was understandably left shaken by what happened. She showed real bravery throughout the investigation, and we’re immensely grateful to her for her support.
“We also want to thank the members of the public who came to her aid without hesitation. Their actions, alongside the rapid response of our officers, ensured the situation didn’t escalate further. This conviction sends a clear message that violence and intimidation on the rail network will not be tolerated.”

The young victim continues to receive support from her family, and police say safeguarding measures were put in place following the incident to ensure her ongoing welfare.
