Man Admits Killing Girlfriend and Pretending She Was Alive

A man has pleaded guilty to murdering his girlfriend at their shared home in East Kilbride before using her phone to convince loved ones she was still alive.

Ewan Methven, 27, admitted killing 21-year-old Phoenix Spencer-Horn inside their flat on Glen Lee on the evening of 16 November 2024. The pair had been in a relationship for two years after meeting at a family party.

Phoenix had sent her mum a message around 9.30pm that evening, saying they were eating takeaway. But prosecutors say that later that night, Methven launched a sudden and brutal attack.

Girlfriend’s Body Found Days Later

The court heard that Phoenix was strangled and stabbed multiple times. Methven then left her body inside the flat and did not raise the alarm for nearly two days.

It wasn’t until 18 November that he called emergency services. By the time police arrived, they found Phoenix dead inside the property. Officers confirmed she had suffered fatal injuries, though the full extent of what happened was not detailed in court.

During that time, Methven used her mobile phone to send messages to Phoenix’s mother, pretending she was fine and still asleep.

One message read: “Hey sorry I’ve just woken up xxx.” In another, he told her mum Phoenix was “alive and well” and “all good”.

Attempt to Hide What Happened

Methven later told police that he had suffered a drug-induced breakdown after taking a combination of cocaine, alcohol, and steroids. He also claimed to have been feeling “lonely” that evening while Phoenix was working.

But the court heard he had ordered takeaway that night and appeared normal to the delivery driver.

Prosecutors say he used Phoenix’s phone throughout the weekend to browse online content, contact drug dealers, and maintain the illusion that she was still alive. He also attempted to clean the flat.

Methven pleaded guilty to murder and attempting to defeat the ends of justice at the High Court in Glasgow. He is due to be sentenced next month.

Family and Friends Pay Tribute

Phoenix, known as “Phe” to loved ones, was described by friends as kind-hearted, bubbly, and full of life.

A tribute shared widely online featured angel wings, a candle, and a heart with her name. It read: “The family and friends of Phoenix Spencer-Horn would appreciate this shared in her memory. They would love everyone to focus on beautiful Phe.”

A fundraising page set up in her memory has raised more than £6,000 to support her family.

Police Condemn Violence

Detective Chief Inspector Susie Cairns said: “Phoenix’s family are devastated, and our thoughts remain with them. Methven now faces the consequences of his actions. Violence like this will never be tolerated in our communities.”

The case comes during a year of renewed focus on violence against women in the UK, with campaigners continuing to call for change.
