Tragedy on quiet Mitcham street as 39-year-old killed in knife attack
A murder investigation is under way after a man described by his family as “lovely” and “peaceful” was fatally stabbed following a row in Mitcham, south west London.
Police were called to Maple Close at around 7.30pm on Monday, where they found the 39-year-old victim with serious knife wounds. He was rushed to hospital but died a short time later.
Family and neighbours in shock
Heartbroken relatives said the man was a kind soul from a good family. One said: “We are devastated – none of this makes sense.”
A mum-of-two living nearby told Metro: “I heard shouting, back and forth arguing, then I found out our neighbour had been stabbed. He was a lovely guy.”
Man arrested on suspicion of murder
A 24-year-old man was arrested yesterday after handing himself in at a south London police station. Police believe the suspect and victim knew each other.
Forensics and patrols in the area
Maple Close remains sealed off as forensic officers comb the scene. Extra patrols are being carried out to reassure residents.
An IT worker who lives on the street said: “There was yelling, really aggressive. Then police and paramedics were everywhere. I couldn’t believe it.”
Police appeal for witnesses
Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell said: “The victim’s family are being supported by specially trained officers. We are doing everything possible to track what happened and urge anyone with information to come forward.”
