Ex-Arsenal Star Charged Over Multiple Serious Offences

Former Arsenal player Thomas Partey has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault following a police investigation dating back to 2022.

Incidents said to span two years

The offences are alleged to have taken place between 2021 and 2022 and involve three women. Two rape charges relate to one individual, three more relate to a second woman, and a further sexual assault charge has been brought in connection with a third.

Police say the investigation began in February 2022 when the first report was made. Detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Central Specialist Crime Command have since reviewed evidence and interviewed witnesses. The decision to charge Partey followed consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service.

Former Arsenal man set for court appearance

Partey, 32, is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 5 August. He was living in Hertfordshire at the time of the alleged offences and had been playing professionally for Arsenal, who signed him from Atletico Madrid in October 2020.

His contract with the Premier League club ended on Monday, just one day before the charges were made public. When approached for comment, the club declined to respond.

Police appeal for further information

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, said: “Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward. We understand this may be a distressing time, and we would encourage anyone else who may have information to come forward.”

Police have set up a dedicated contact email for those wishing to speak to detectives about the case: [email protected].

Career overshadowed by investigation

During his time at Arsenal, Partey made 130 Premier League appearances and scored nine goals. He played 35 league games last season, helping the club secure second place in the Premier League. He also appeared 12 times in the Champions League, reaching the semi-finals before being knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain.

Partey had previously built his career at Atletico Madrid and was considered one of Ghana’s most prominent international players. However, the new charges have now cast a long shadow over his football legacy.

Case expected to continue through the year

As the case moves forward, prosecutors will review all evidence in preparation for Partey’s first court appearance. The timeline for any potential trial remains uncertain, but police have said they are committed to keeping the public informed while protecting the privacy and wellbeing of those involved.

The Metropolitan Police reiterated their appeal for anyone affected by the case, or anyone with relevant information, to get in touch with officers.

Further updates are expected following Partey’s court appearance in August.
