Dad Who Vanished Into Wilderness Four Years Ago With Children Killed By Police

Gunfire Ends A Wilderness Manhunt
A father who vanished into the New Zealand bush with his three young children nearly four years ago has been shot dead in a dramatic police standoff. Tom Phillips, who evaded capture despite a nationwide search and multiple sightings, was killed during a confrontation in the early hours of Monday morning. A police officer was seriously injured in the exchange of gunfire.

Standoff Begins After Robbery Call-Out
Police had been responding to a reported burglary at a commercial site in Piopio, a small rural town on New Zealand’s North Island, when they spotted Phillips riding a quad bike with one of his children. Officers pursued the vehicle and deployed road spikes to stop it. When the bike veered off-road, they were met with gunfire at the scene. One officer was shot in the head and remains in a critical condition.

Phillips was later shot by a second unit and died at the scene. While formal identification is still ongoing, police say they are confident it was the 47-year-old fugitive.

Children Found Alive In Remote Bush Camp
Later that day, authorities located the two remaining children at a remote campsite deep in dense bushland. All three children, including the one who was with Phillips at the time of the incident, were confirmed to be physically unharmed. The child found at the scene reportedly provided key information to help police track down their siblings.

The children’s mother, who has been identified only as Cat, was notified and later told reporters she was “deeply relieved” the ordeal was over but “saddened” by how events had ended.

A Life On The Run
Phillips vanished with his children in December 2021 after losing custody. A skilled outdoorsman and experienced bushman, he used the rugged terrain around Marokopa to stay hidden. The area is known for its dense forests, rough coastline, and complex cave networks.

Over the past three years, he and the children were linked to a number of burglaries at hardware and grocery stores. Footage taken last October by a group of teenagers showed Phillips and the children dressed in camouflage and carrying their own gear through the bush. One child, when asked if anyone knew where they were, simply said, “Only you.”

A warrant for Phillips’s arrest was also issued last year following his suspected role in a bank robbery, and police believe he had an accomplice. It is still unknown whether others in the local community helped him during his time on the run.

A Tragic Ending To A National Mystery
Phillips’s disappearance became one of New Zealand’s most talked-about cases. Earlier this year, his family publicly pleaded for him to come home. His sister, Rozzi, said she was ready to help him return and rebuild: “I really want to see you and the kids and be part of your lives again.”

Prime Minister Chris Luxon called the outcome “sad and absolutely tragic,” reflecting the mood across the country. Residents in Phillips’s home region said they had hoped for a peaceful resolution. One local woman said: “I just wish there had been a happier ending. The kids will be devastated.”

What began as a missing persons case has ended with a father dead, a community in shock, and three children now facing life without the man they had followed into the wild.
