City centre closed and cordoned off as ‘suspicious package’ found

Large-Scale Emergency Operation Closes Old Market Square

A major police investigation was launched in Nottingham city centre this morning (Tuesday, March 11) after a suspicious package was discovered outside Five Guys restaurant and the former Debenhams building in Old Market Square.

The discovery led to a significant lockdown, with emergency services closing off several key roads and deploying a bomb disposal unit and robot to assess the threat.

Road Closures and Public Transport Disruptions

The incident resulted in the closure of:

Old Market Square

King Street and Queen Street

Market Street and Friar Lane

Long Row, Wheeler Gate, Exchange Walk, Parliament Street, and South Sherwood Street

Maid Marian Way and Tollhouse Lane

Public transport was also heavily affected, with NET trams, NCT buses, and Trent Barton services either cancelled or diverted during the emergency operation.

Bomb Squad Declares Package Safe

At 6:45am, Nottinghamshire Police issued a statement confirming that the package had been made safe, although cordons remained in place until 8:30am while authorities completed their investigation.

A bomb disposal unit was seen leaving the area on Friar Lane just before 8:30am, and what appeared to be a bomb squad robot was spotted outside the Debenhams building around 7am.

Investigation Ongoing

The exact nature of the package and the circumstances surrounding its discovery remain unclear, with police yet to release further details.

Authorities are continuing to investigate, and further updates will follow as more information becomes available.
