Chris Brown freed on bail from Manchester prison

American R&B singer Chris Brown has been granted bail after a judge overturned an earlier decision to keep him in custody over an alleged violent assault at a London nightclub.

The 36-year-old artist, whose real name is Christopher Maurice Brown, was arrested in the early hours of May 15 at The Lowry Hotel in Manchester. He was later charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, following an incident in February 2023 at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, Central London.

Singer accused of violent assault caught on CCTV

Prosecutors say Brown attacked music producer Abe Diaw in a packed nightclub, punching and kicking him alongside another man. The entire incident was reportedly captured on CCTV.

Brown had been remanded into custody following his initial court appearance at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on May 17, with the judge ruling that the offence was too serious to be handled outside Crown Court. The case is being transferred to Southwark Crown Court, where the next hearing is scheduled for June 13.

Star granted bail after showing ‘change in attitude’

Today, lawyers told the court Brown had demonstrated a commitment to complying with court orders. Judge Hirst agreed to release him on bail. Brown did not appear in person for the hearing.

The judge had earlier remarked that while the singer had shown no remorse at the time of his arrest, his recent conduct suggested a shift in attitude. Bail conditions were not disclosed publicly, but he is expected to remain in the UK until the next hearing.

Manager seen delivering fast food to custody suite

Brown’s manager, Anthony Wilson, was spotted arriving at the police station with a bag of KFC and a change of clothes for the singer shortly after his arrest.

Brown had confirmed his name and date of birth in court last week, giving The Lowry Hotel as his current address. Dressed in a Nike tracksuit, he nodded to supporters in the public gallery as he was led away following the 30-minute hearing.

Tour future still unclear

It remains to be seen whether Brown’s upcoming UK and European tour will proceed as planned. The first show is scheduled for June 8, less than a week before his court date.

The Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed the charge under section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act. Prosecutors have urged the public to avoid online speculation or commentary that could prejudice proceedings.
