Pregnant Mother Found Dead in Northern Ireland Home as Police Launch Murder Probe

Police in Northern Ireland have launched a murder investigation after a young mother was found dead inside a house in Donaghadee.

The victim has been named as 27-year-old Sarah Montgomery, a mother of two who was confirmed to be pregnant at the time of her death. Emergency services were called to a property in the Elmfield Walk area just after midday on Monday, following reports of an unconscious woman with a serious injury.

Despite the efforts of paramedics at the scene, Sarah could not be saved and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Suspect in Custody as Detectives Investigate

A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody. He is being questioned by detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team.

Detective Chief Inspector Tom Phillips, who is leading the investigation, said: “Sadly, Sarah Montgomery – a young mother and expectant parent – was pronounced dead at the scene. Our thoughts are with her devastated family as they begin to come to terms with this horrific news.”

He added that specially trained officers are supporting Sarah’s loved ones and that enquiries are at an early stage.

Community in Shock

The quiet residential area of Elmfield Walk remained cordoned off on Tuesday, with a visible police presence in place. Local residents have described the incident as “unimaginable” and “deeply upsetting.”

North Area Chief Inspector Yvonne McManus said: “We understand this news will cause real shock and concern within the community. Residents can expect to see officers in and around the area today. Please speak to them if you have concerns or questions – we are here to help.”

She added: “We know the impact that violence against women and girls has on our communities. It’s a priority for us, and we’re committed to building trust, offering support and making sure women and girls feel safe in their homes and neighbourhoods.”

Appeal for Information

Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward. Officers are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have seen or heard anything unusual in the area in the hours leading up to the discovery.

“We would appeal to anyone who might be able to help us piece together the circumstances of what happened to contact police immediately,” said DCI Phillips.

Wider Focus on Violence Against Women

Sarah’s death comes amid growing calls to tackle violence against women across the UK. Campaigners say more needs to be done to protect women from harm, particularly in domestic settings.

Authorities in Northern Ireland have reiterated their commitment to addressing the issue, working closely with local communities and support agencies to reduce risk and improve safety.

Anyone with information is urged to contact detectives on 101, quoting reference number 601 of 03/06/25. Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers.
