Police have arrested a 67-year-old man on suspicion of attempted rape following an attack on a woman inside a cinema in north London.
The incident happened at around 3.45pm on Tuesday, June 11, at a cinema in Finchley. A woman in her 30s reported being assaulted while visiting the venue in what should have been a routine afternoon outing.
She is now being supported by specialist officers from the Metropolitan Police, who say their investigation is progressing “at pace.”
Suspect Caught After Public Appeal
The suspect was located and arrested in the Primrose Hill area on Monday, following a public appeal for information. He remains in police custody as detectives continue to gather evidence and speak to witnesses.
Detective Chief Inspector Paul Ridley, who is leading the case, thanked members of the public for helping to quickly circulate the appeal.
He said: “Our thanks go to the public who worked quickly to share the appeal, leading to the arrest. I know this incident will have caused concern for the local community, so I’d like to reassure Londoners that this investigation is moving forward quickly.”
Call for Support and Safety
The attack has sparked fresh calls for more protections for women and girls in public spaces. Heidi Riedel, CEO of Woman’s Trust, said the case highlighted just how bold perpetrators have become.
“This is a shocking incident – no one should feel unsafe at the cinema, or when they are out and about doing routine activities,” she said.
“While this is hopefully an isolated event, it is an indication of how serious the violence against women and girls epidemic is here in the UK, and how bold and opportunistic perpetrators can be.”
She also urged that the victim receive specialist support to process what happened.
Ongoing Patrols in the Area
Police say neighbourhood officers remain on patrol in the surrounding area and have encouraged anyone with concerns to speak to them.
“Our commitment remains that women and girls in London should feel safe going about their daily lives,” DCI Ridley added.
The investigation continues, and officers are asking anyone with additional information to come forward.
