The wife of the man accused of ploughing a car into celebrating fans at Liverpool FC’s Premier League trophy parade only realised her family’s connection to the horror when she recognised her vehicle on live news coverage, neighbours have revealed.
The 53-year-old suspect, a married father of three, remains in custody as Merseyside Police continue to question him on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving, and driving while under the influence of drugs. Detectives were granted an extension on Wednesday, allowing them to detain him until Thursday as investigations continue.
Neighbour: ‘She saw it was her car on the telly’
Residents of West Derby, where the family lives in a quiet cul-de-sac, spoke of their shock. One neighbour told The Sun: “She [the wife] first realised when she saw it was her car on the telly, when she saw it being driven at the parade.”
Police units, including the force’s Matrix response team, arrived at the property on Monday evening, initially prompting some neighbours to believe the family had been burgled.
Another local added: “It’s completely out of character. They’re a nice family. He is a fantastic guy. It just doesn’t make sense.”
79 People Injured, Seven Still in Hospital
Police confirmed that 79 people were injured when a grey Ford Galaxy was driven into a crowd of supporters on Water Street. Seven remain in hospital in a stable condition.
The vehicle reportedly followed an ambulance past a temporary barricade that had been lifted to let emergency services reach a fan suffering a suspected heart attack. Dashcam footage from the suspect’s car is being analysed as part of the investigation.
Prime Minister Visits Liverpool
Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited Merseyside Police Headquarters on Wednesday, where he met with senior police leaders, local officials, and Liverpool City Region Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram.
Starmer said: “The scenes on Monday were just awful — to see how incredible joy at an amazing achievement turned to horror in a moment. It’s really important to be here to go through this first-hand with you.”
Messages of Support from Royals and City Leaders
King Charles sent his condolences to those affected, stating: “I know that the strength of community spirit for which your city is renowned will be a comfort and support to those in need.”
The Prince and Princess of Wales also shared a statement, saying they were “deeply saddened” by the events and that “what should have been a joyful celebration ended with tragedy.”
Community in Shock, Investigations Continue
While the motive for the crash remains unclear, authorities have confirmed that the incident is not being treated as terrorism and no other suspects are being sought.
The case has drawn national attention, not only for the devastation caused but also for the apparent disconnect between the suspect’s outwardly normal life and the events that unfolded. Police have until Thursday to continue questioning him as they work to piece together the full circumstances of the crash.
