he 53-year-old man arrested after a car ploughed into crowds during Liverpool FC’s Premier League trophy parade has been detained on suspicion of attempted murder, police confirmed on Tuesday.
Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jaundrill of Merseyside Police stated: “We have arrested a 53-year-old man from West Derby on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving offences and driving whilst unfit through drugs. He remains in custody where he is being interviewed.”
The devastating incident, which occurred on Water Street in Liverpool city centre on Monday, left 47 people injured — including children — with 27 rushed to hospital. Two of those hospitalised remain in serious condition. Fire crews had to rescue multiple people trapped under the vehicle.
King Charles III released a statement expressing his shock and sympathy: “My wife and I were deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the terrible events that took place in Liverpool on Monday. It was truly devastating to see what should have been a joyous celebration for so many end in such distressing circumstances. Our prayers and deepest sympathy are with all those who have been affected.”
Mayor of Liverpool City Region Steve Rotheram backed Merseyside Police’s decision to publicly clarify the suspect’s ethnicity and nationality — details that were confirmed shortly after the arrest. “It was absolutely the right thing to do,” he said. “Within minutes of the incident being posted [online], there was speculation. Some nefarious groups were trying to stir up division around who was responsible. The police acted very quickly to put that to bed.”
Authorities have reiterated that the incident is not being treated as terrorism and no other suspects are being sought.
Mayor Rotheram added that four people remained “very, very ill in hospital” and that the local authority continues to liaise with emergency services for updates.
Emergency services praised the swift actions of bystanders and first responders. Investigations into the exact motive and circumstances of the incident are ongoing.
Merseyside Police urge anyone with footage or information to contact the force and quote incident reference 260624.
