Police Issue Statement After Car Crashes Into Crowd Of Liverpool Fans At Open Top Bus Parade

Merseyside Police have launched an urgent investigation after a car reportedly struck several pedestrians in Liverpool city centre—just hours after the city celebrated its 20th league title.

The incident unfolded near Water Street and Dale Street on Monday evening, a route passed by Liverpool’s open-top bus parade less than 24 hours earlier. Emergency services flooded the area following 999 calls just after 6pm.

Emergency Services Flood the Scene

Dramatic aerial photos from the scene showed a black car stationary in the middle of the road, surrounded by police vehicles and fire engines. Witnesses described a chaotic atmosphere as multiple ambulances arrived within minutes.

One disturbing video, filmed from a nearby building, appeared to show pedestrians being hit one after another as shocked fans screamed from the pavement.

Merseyside Police confirmed: “We were contacted at just after 6pm today, Monday 26 May, following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street. The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained.”

Man Detained as Crowd Left Reeling

It is understood the man behind the wheel remained at the scene and was taken into custody by officers. His identity and possible motive have not yet been released. Police have not ruled out any lines of enquiry, including whether the act was deliberate.

North West Ambulance Service issued a separate statement, saying: “We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services. Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.”

City’s Celebration Turns to Concern

The crash occurred just a day after jubilant scenes swept through Liverpool, with fans packing the streets to see Arne Slot and his team parade the Premier League trophy. For many, the festive mood quickly turned to fear as news of the crash spread online.

As of now, the number of people injured and the extent of those injuries remain unknown. Police say further updates will be issued in due course.

Anyone with information or footage of the incident is urged to contact Merseyside Police immediately.
