A major incident unfolded in Liverpool city centre this evening after a car drove into a crowd of people attending the Premier League trophy parade.
Emergency services rushed to Water Street, near the junction with Dale Street, following multiple reports of a vehicle colliding with pedestrians just after 6pm on Monday, May 26.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as the car “rammed through the crowd” that had gathered to celebrate Liverpool Football Club’s title victory.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed: “We are currently dealing with reports of a road traffic collision in Liverpool city centre. We were contacted at just after 6pm following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street. The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained. Emergency services are currently on the scene.”
A police cordon has been established and roads around the area have been closed while investigations continue. There is no official word yet on the number of injuries or their severity.
The incident has cast a shadow over what had been a jubilant atmosphere in the city as thousands turned out to celebrate Liverpool’s latest title win.
