Police Update As Body Of Missing Layton Carr Found

Police investigating the death of 14-year-old Layton Carr are appealing for witnesses after the teenager’s body was discovered inside a burning building at Fairfield industrial park in Gateshead. Officers believe a fire was deliberately lit and are now working to identify all those present at the scene on Friday evening.

Arrests and Ongoing Investigation

Northumbria Police confirmed that 16 children — 13 boys and 3 girls aged between 11 and 14 — have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. All have been released on bail while enquiries continue. Officers say the investigation remains in its early stages.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Atherton said:

“A thorough investigation is under way as we determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident that night. Our thoughts remain with Layton’s family and friends as they begin to process the loss of their loved one.”

Witness Appeal and Dedicated Online Portal

Police are urging anyone who was at Fairfield industrial park in Bill Quay on Friday 2 May to come forward — even if they believe their information to be insignificant.

“We’re aware of footage and information circulating online,” DCI Atherton said. “Please upload anything relevant via our Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP) so it can assist with our investigation. Do not speculate or publicly name anyone, especially those under 18, due to legal protections.”

The MIPP link is now live on the Northumbria Police website.

Family Statement: “Our Bright and Beautiful Boy”

In a statement released by police, Layton’s devastated family described him as a “kind, caring and loving boy” who “had an absolute heart of gold.”

“He was a family boy that loved his mam and sisters more than anything in the world,” the statement added. “Layton, we love you more than any words can ever explain. You will be missed more than you’ll ever know. Our bright and beautiful boy.”

Fire Response and Safety Concerns

Ten fire appliances were sent to the blaze, which firefighters described as a “severe fire within a section of one of the buildings.” The site has reportedly been a hotspot for anti-social behaviour, with residents raising concerns to councillors in recent months.

Local councillors Amanda Wintcher, Ian Patterson and Paul Diston stated: “We have been in touch with residents about concerns regarding anti-social behaviour at Fairfield industrial estate and the former Harrison’s slipway site for some time. Contact has been made with Securitas, Gateshead Council, the fire service and Northumbria Police.”

Community Support

A GoFundMe appeal to support Layton’s mother has now raised over £20,000 from more than 1,400 donations.

How to Help

Anyone with information, photos or video from the evening of Friday 2 May is asked to upload it via the police MIPP portal or contact Northumbria Police directly.
