Holidaymaker, 60, ‘murdered’ onboard luxury cruise ship after leaving UK

A cruise ship passenger has been killed aboard the luxury liner MSC Virtuosa just hours after departing the UK, prompting a murder investigation.

A 57-year-old man from Exeter was arrested on suspicion of murder when the Maltese-flagged vessel returned to Southampton, Hampshire, on Sunday morning (5 May). The suspect was detained following the death of a 60-year-old man during an alleged altercation around 8.30pm on Saturday while the ship was still in British waters.

The deceased man’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary confirmed that the death is being treated as suspicious and is under full investigation. In a statement, Detective Chief Inspector Matt Gillooly, the senior investigating officer, said:

“We want to reassure you that this appears to be an isolated incident onboard, and we want to thank the crew for their cooperation and assistance with our enquiries.”

Incident Occurred Shortly After Departure

The MSC Virtuosa had departed Southampton earlier in the day for what was scheduled to be a round-trip cruise. The cruise line, MSC Cruises, confirmed the incident and is cooperating fully with the authorities.

Due to the location of the incident within UK waters, the ship returned to port for police intervention.
